Hi

I purchased an HP pavilion ze4315 laptop in June this
year. It has Microsoft windows XP home edition as the
operating system. I have had problems with the icons on
the desktop dissapearing and all of the are replaced with
the icon that appears when windows cannot read a file
(i.e. a box with a red circle, blue square and green
trianngle or some combination of these). When this occurs
I can not access any files. The files cannot be accesed
through the start menu either because the icons are
replaced like before. Thefore I lost files when i used the
restore disks.HP said to use the restore disks which I did
but the problem resurfaced a month later, they siad to do
the same thing which I did. But last week the problem
returned and it was taken to get fixed. HP thought it may
have been a harddrive problem but the people that looked
at it did a full diagnostics test and it passed OK. They
said that the problems relating to the icons was a
registry fault and they have restored the registry to an
older save of two weeks ago. They said that the problem is
likey to return since this is the third such occasion that
it has occured. They said that it is likey that some
software is corrupting the registry but the only software
that I use is what came with the computer, HP printer
software and micrsoft mouse software. Could I have faulty
Microsoft XP home edition software? Have you heared of
this problem before? I would apprecaite any help that you
ould give me.

Thanks

p.s. also once the computer wouldn't start yp it would get
to a certain point and freeze. The restore disks need to
be used.

No, this has nothing to do with a faulty Windows XP. It undoubtedly has
to do with faulty hardware in the computer. My first thought would be
the RAM being bad, but it could also be the processor and/or
motherboard. Just testing the hard drive for failures is not
sufficient.
