Icons with no symbol

Hi Folks.
The icons in my Quick Launch tray have lost their symbols. Each
one is just a multi-colored mosaic.
I have tried a 'system restore' to a point yesterday when they were
there, but that didn't do it.
I also tried to change the icon by right clicking each one, choosing
/properties/'change icon' Apply.
Actually, I was choosing the icons that were there before, like Outlook
Express, Internet Explorer,
Show desktop, Earthlink, etc. That also doesn't work.
The icons still function correctly and launch whatever I select and I
can see what they are when I hold the mouse over them with the 'tool
tip'. But I would like to know what anyone thinks the problem is and
how I can restore the symbols.
Thanks folks...........deango

Sounds like the Shell Icon Cache is damaged.

Delete the IconCache.db file from your profile directory:
C:/Documents and Settings/{Username}/Local Settings/Application. Windows will rebuild it.
It is a "Hidden" file. If you can't see or find it, Open any folder, click "View", "Folder
Options", and the "View" tab. Check the box, "Show all files", Uncheck "Hide file extensions
for known file types", click "Apply", "OK"
Refresh the C:\Windows\ folder (F5), and you should see the file now.
or
Install TweakUI, it has a "Repair Icon" function.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

You can increase the size of the cache with the following registry patch. Create a new text
file called IconCache.txt Select the below text beginning with the 'R' in REGEDIT4 and
and include the blank line. Copy it to the clipboard, and paste it into the text file. Rename
the file to "IconCache.reg" and then double click it to modify the registry.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]
"Max Cached Icons"="4096"

^-----End copy

Thanks Unk, that worked. Your a prince !
I don't know how to create a text file, but I think Kelly has a regedit
or vbs script to increase the cache.......... I'll check Google to see
how to do the text file...........
I wish I were confident enough to use TweakUI, have been interested
since WinME, but there's so much that can go wrong.
Thanks again !............deango
