Icons shown in List View

Whwn I change the view of what files exist in a folder to List view, the
icons have changed and no longer show the icons associated with the
applications. They look fine for the icon and tile views.
I have tried:
expanding the size of MaxCachedIcons to the maximum size
and deleting the ShellIconCache file,
but neither of these worked (fixed the problem.)
Anybody have any ideas what I can do to fix this?
Thanks,
John

Deleting ShellIconcache in Windows 2000 is a no-no.

What do you have set for Max ShellIcon Cache? No more than 4096 I hope.

Although there's an easy way to recreate it, MS doesn't believe there's a
problem in deleting this file, why do you?

See the Resolution section of this article which states, "If the icons are still
incorrect, delete the ShellIconCache file.":

Icons Randomly Change to Different Icons

Because I was told not to by MSPS. Of course you can if you want but that is not the fix for Windows 2000 and it is not the thing to do. So what is the fix? Well it is lowering then raising the icon size in Display Properties.

I've done this a couple of times and it causes no problems. The file is
eventually recreated, but the last time it tok a couple of weeks before it
reappeared. It could't detect any difference in system operation between
the time it was missing and after it reappeared.

KB article 216165 says to change the attribute then delete it and have it
recreated.
Changing the size to 4096 does not help.
I just got done following q132668, changing the color setting, that does not
work either.
It seems to only be for microsoft excel icons only and for list view only. I
go into folder options under File Types tab. The icons under extensions for
excel are wrong there also, but the application is right. I click on one of
the excel extensions and click change, the icon for the program there is
right.
It is only under the list view that the icons for excel are messed up. Icon
and tile views are fine.

Try running repair Office. This can sometimes happen when the install folder for Office gets corrupted. When you do the Repair select restore shortcuts.

Thanks George for another helpful hint, but this did not fix the problem. I
realize now that the icons look fine in only the large icon and thumbnail
views. It still is wrong in the list, detail, and smallicon views.
