Folder names suddenly won't display in Medium and Small Icons view?

All of a sudden, all the sub folders' titles (names) vanish in some folder
displays when I select "Medium Icons " or "Small Icons" in the Views menu.
And no amount of searching for help on "show folder names" and the like,
gives any clue as to how I can get the folder names back. If I select "List"
view or "detail" view, the names are shown, so they are all still there, but
Vista is hiding them in the other view modes for some mysterious reason.
And this problem only occurs in some folders (such as in the drives and
partitions in the My computer window, and occasional other folder windows)
How can I restore the displaying of folder names for all kinds of views?

PS
On the desktop, the shortcut icons' names are displayed normally.

Thanks Paul,
winhelponline.com write:
For folders designated as Pictures or Videos (folder templates assigned via
the Customize tab), you should be able to toggle the file name display by
right-clicking on an empty area in the folder, clicking View and unchecking
the Hide File Names option.
But I'm unable to find a "Hide File Names" option in the View menu of the My
computer Window

This is from that article: (http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/138/1/)

"In Windows XP, holding the SHIFT key when changing to Thumbnails view
toggled the display of file name. This trick works in Windows Vista as well.
Follow these steps:

Open the folder which is exhibiting this behavior
From the Views dropdown list, select Details
Press and hold the SHIFT key, and select Medium Icons (or Large Icons) from
the Views dropdown list
Close and re-open the folder."
