I have just upgraded to windows 2000 from windows 98SE.
when I first loggeg on the icons for my computer, my
network places and recycle bin had been replaced by an
icon which usually represents an unknown file format (a
small white page with the windows flag on it). Everything
works it just seems very odd.

Sounds like a Namespce problem. This is an example of what I am talking about:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;214599

Notice how in the example the link at the bottom of the above page you must reguister the dll which implements the namespace for the example. So that's what we need to do in your case. Register the correct dll.

Try this Start | Run | regsvr32 webvw.dll | OK | OK That's my guess. Someone my have the right one for sure.
