Icons on taskbar

I just started using Windows XP on a new computer. How do I place shortcut
icons like Show Desktop, IE, and Outlook Express on the taskbar next to the
Start button? Thanks.

Thanks. I got everything but Outlook Express, and one I didn't want: AOL,
which I won't be using. Next step?

Hi.

Click on the program you want to have in the quick launch area and choose to
create a shortcut to the desktop and after that drag the program from the
desktop with the left mouse button and drop it there into the quick launch
area.

Regards...Gunilla.

If you're talking about shortcut items, the place you're describing is not
the Task Bar, it's a toolbar called the Quick Launch Bar.

It may look like it's the Task Bar because, by default, the Quick Launch Bar
sits *on* the Task Bar, but it doesn't have to. In fact you can drag it off
and put it, for example, by itself on the top or left of the screen. I
particularly like it on the side, because it takes up little screen real
estate there, and provides room for lots of shortcuts while still leaving
room on the task bar for running programs.

As far as how to add shortcuts to it, the easiest way is simply to drag them
there.

Gunilla - I was reading your post to Steverino and I understand all that you
suggested doing. My problem is that I cannot find and do not know where to
look to find the "show desktop" icon/file in order to drag it to the quick
launch bar. Can you tell me how to find it? It must be out htere somewhere.
Thanks very much.

There is a copy here:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop.scf

There are probably other copies if you search for it.
You can always create your own Show Desktop.scf
It is only a text file as follows:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
