I find that on my 2PCs the ions displayed in the right hand corner are
different and I don't seem able to change them or add to them
How is this done?

If you mean the area where the clock is, this area is called the system
tray, and the only icons that appear there are programmed to by the author
of said program.
You can't make a particular program appear there if it doesn't have that
functionality, (maybe some third party app will allow this).

If you just want a simple link to a program/document you can use the Quick
Launch toolbar, (click right mouse button on taskbar and choose "toolbars",
then check the one you want). You can drag and drop items to these toolbars.

Thanks for your reply.
I do want some icons to appear in the system tray to let me know what is
happening
For instance I want the Internet connection icon to appear as well as Local
Area Connection ( I have a local network)
In my desktop they normally appear but in my laptop only the local area
connection appears
When I look at the Taskbar and Start menu options and select Customise there
is a list of current items and past items
In the case of the desktop the current list is correct but in the case of
the laptop the current items have some items missing
I try and keep the two PCs with the same setting

Open the Properties of the Internet Connection (in Network Connections)
and click "Show icon in notification area when connected".
