Does "show settings icon on taskbar" exist in XP?

In win98, one can get an icon in the systray that can be used easily
to change display screen resolution.

It's set at Control Panel / Display / Settings /Advanced / Check "Show
settings icon on taskbar".

This is very useful when some webpages are wider than the screen, and
a friend wants it in XP.

Thanks.

On those machines that utilize IGFX software for the video card, right-clicking on
the desktop will give you a "Display Modes" menu where you can change the display
from any available values.

If your PC does not have this or a similar software installed there are some
3rd-party apps that place an icon in the System Tray (Notification Area) that will do
the same job.

One is included with the Win98 powertoys for Windows and, although outdated now, will
still work with XP.

Download the file by clicking on the link below and use WinZip or some other archive
software to *EXTRACT the file QuickRes.exe from the downloaded file (powertoys.exe)
Then copy this file to your WINDOWS or system32 folder.

Then create a shortcut to this file in your "Startup" folder so it starts each times
Windows does.

*NB
Do *not* double-click on powertoys.exe and install that, as some other elements in it
have compatibility issues with XP.

But extracting and using QuickRes.exe will be fine....

Download powertoys for Win98 from :

Never tried either of 'em.

Is your hardware/drivers of such vintage that changing resolutions is
required for browsing?

WEll, she doesn't have a wide monitor and she doesn't like scrolling
left and right to read or see an entire webpage. More and more of
them are wide these days.

Although after I posted here, I tried changing the resolution on a
wide webpage I was looking at, and it got smaller but I still didn't
see more of the width at one time. In fact it led to a lot of
problems, not being able to get to the vertical scroll bar etc. I'm
stuck using win98 until I can fix my XP, so maybe this works better in
XP.

Maybe I should have her try adjusting the res while she's in Display
Settings Advanced before installing this. I apologize if she doesn't
use it, but I'm sure I will when I get XP working again. For all its
problems in w98, I still think it is useful.

So, thanks to you and Tim.

Okay - I still don't quite get it!

I haven't ever changed any monitor settings for any XP system just to
view some web page. but I have not visited every web page in the world
yet. If I had to adjust it, I would find it quite annoying.

Not sure what a wide web page is either.

Good luck!

Sure it's annoying.

My memory's not what it used to be (or maybe it was never very good, I
don't remember) but there have definitely been screens, maybe not
webpages, for which I've made the resolution higher, and thus the
image more compressed, so that I can see the whole thing at one time.

If you always have the biggest monitor available and use the highest
resolution it has, you won't have occasion to do this, but I think
everyone who uses a 12" or 15" monitor would, once in a while.
Not sure what a wide web page is either.

By a wide web page, I meant one that is wider than the screen and
which requires scrolling left or right to see the whole thing.

I assume they design them this way more and more often to take
advantage of wide monitors. Oh, a wide monitor is one with a
different aspect ratio for the screen from what had been standard,
like "wide screen" at a movie theatre.

When I posted the first two times, I got a 401 iirc, that it was a
duplicate message iirc or duplicate name, so I posted a blank one, and
when that went through, I posted a short one.

I didn't intend to post 4 times.

I'm sorry. I didn't thank you for the links. I got distracted by the
next sentence.

I don't keep track of the age of her computer, and don't actually keep
track of mine either. Mine is self-assembled and sometimes I change
one part without changing the others. I can't keep track of it all.

I do know I had a PcJr, an XT, a 386 (which I also assembled), and
this one, in which I'm using an 800MHz chip and an 80 gig harddrive.
I have 1.5 gigs of ram, but could never get that to work on win98,
even with the recommended lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat, so I'm
only using 1 gig of it. When I'm sure I won't go back into win98 for
anything, I'll start using the other 0.5 gig.
