ICONS-logo to generic?

I have about 15 icons on my desk top and when I turn off my pc and restart
the next day two of the icons go from the "logo" look of the site (eBay and
google) in looks of the icon only, they still work and go to the right
sites. The new look of the two icons is generic a square with a (e )in the
center. Why does this happen? I'll try to make new icons from the eBay or
google sites and some times it will make the logo icon again, but most of the
tries come out generic. Thanks if you can help.

Well, you should delete them but when you do delete them you should be aware
that your PC will have deleted the icon that was attached to those shortcuts
that you had on your desktop. There's a few management utilities out there
that will help you keep them or, alternatively, you can save the favicon.ico
from the site itself and map the shortcuts to that icon on your local hard
drive. Beyond that each and every time you delete your temp files these
icons will disappear. It's native to Windows and no, Microsoft isn't
probably going to set it up so that it will save the icons associated with a
shortcut drawn from a website though that's an interesting idea now that I
think about it. If you'd like credit for suggesting it (you never know,
maybe you'll get a free t-shirt or something) you can open IE, click help,
click send feedback, tell them all that you said and then add my response
and suggest it if you'd like.
