Icons keep disappearing in the system tray

N

Norman Swartz

For the last week or two, my computer has booted up properly, with all
expected icons displaying in the system tray. But then over a course of
hours, the icons, a few at a time, disappear from the system tray. I have
scanned the computer for adware and removed a great number of pesky files.
I have run Norton AV and removed backdoor.trojan. And finally, today, I
have re-installed Windows XP professional SP-1. But the problem persists.
Does any of you have a suggestion how to fix this annoyance? Thanks.

Always keep antivirus and spy removal applications (links on the bottom of the page) up-to-date, and scan regularly.

If you notice the icon only dissapears when you move you mouse over it, it
could be that the program has prematurly ended, but windows hasn't updated
the systray, failing that the program is failing, and just quiting.....

What programs are ending?

Or you mean the icons are hidding, is there a little Arrow on the left of
the systray? if so, you can sort that by right click on Start, choose
Properties, click Taskbar tab, and untick "Hide Inactive Icons"

Hope that might help.

Just for (my) interest, have a look in the Event Viewer, Application branch,
to see if there are any Winlogon entries saying "The shell stopped
unexpectedly".

Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

For the last week or so, I've been getting the above error, which seems to
restart the shell OK, except that it always loses one of my (user startup)
notification area icons.

Just wondering if we've got the same problem.
