System Tray

Does anyone have any idea why some icons would stop appearing in the system
tray even though the "show in system tray" box is checked in the preferences
section of the program? About 80% of the icons just stopped showing in the
tray. They also disappeared from the "customize notifications" section
under task bar properties. I'm running Windows XP SP2. Thanks for any
help.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

This happens to me sometimes too. Sometimes there's a glitch in Windows
XP; all of a sudden the screen blanks out, and then after recovery from
that, that requires the applications to redisplay themselves. Some
applications aren't smart enough to redisplay their icons in the system
tray when such an event occurs. Older versions of Earthlink used to
just disappear from the system tray all the time.
