system tray icons and app mismatch

Hi,
My OS is Windows XP Pro. and my problem is: The icons on the system tray
(low right hand corner of the desktop) are not showing up when an
application that supports tray icons is active, even if the behavior is set
to always active in the property sheet of the Taskbar control. In fact, the
operating system slowly change, or loose the original icons. In most cases
the taskbar properties dialog box show the bad icons as small folders. The
programs in question are loaded in memory and work fine. The problem is that
I don't get notification of important data exchange and activities.

Can you please help me?
