Icons are gone

Hey,
Ok, so here's the deal. My icons are gone from the task bar. Yes I've
unchecked "hide inactive icons" but no luck. I don't even have the arrow to
access these hidden icons. Is there any other way to find the "safely remove
hardware" feature? I'm using an external HD, so I can't eject like I could a
flashdrive. TIA

Which part of the taskbar: the start menu, quick launch area, open programs
area or the tray by the clock? What do you mean you don't have an
arrow--are you referring to the cursor? Why do you think the external HD is
involved? We need some specific info in order to help.

Sorry, I thought I was being specific, but I guess late at night thoughts
don't always do me good. It's the area by the clock. And normally there is an
arrow button that lets me expand the area to see the icons currently not in
use - this is different than the cursor. My external HD isn't part of the
problem, but part of why I am frustrated since I can't figure out how to
remove it safely without access to that menu. :)
Thanks again
