I just installed Windows Vista on my Dell System. Everything went fine with
the installation but after i did windows update all my folder and drive icons
in my computer or windows explorer and the my computer, recycle bin and
network places icons on the desktop have changed to the generic icons. I was
able to get the desktop icons back by reseting them to default but i can't
seem to get all the drive and folder icons to show up properly. anyone else
seen this or know how to fix it ? Thanks for any help in advance.

My problem is similar: I downloaded a couple of things from Google Updater &
then because they didn't show up on the desktop, created shortcuts. The
icons for those are all generic.

What worked for me in PX and hasn't happened in VISTA yet is a tip I
picked up in oour local paper!

Right mouse click on the desktop in a blank place

Select Properties

Change the resolution from what it is to something different and OK
it.

Repeat and change the resolution back to what you want and OK it

Pray .....

I think this is one way of recreating the shelliconcache file but it
worked for me and has stuck.

I've been having the same strange issues wih Vista as well. All of a sudden
out of the blue program icons change themselves to generic. Even tho the icon
properties show the correct icon. Changing display settings to 16 bit and
back to 32 didn't work for me. What I found to work was to boot into safe
mode, then reboot to normal.
