when my computer starts up and I have to pick a user, how
do I change the icon for a user, by the way I'm using
windows XP home edition

Jimmy,

Type "Control Userpasswords" in the RUN box. Select an user account, change picture. Choose one from the list.

Or easier still, hit "start"... "control panel"...
then "user accounts"... and either "pick an account to
change" or "change an account", and finally "change
icon". It's pretty intuitive once you get into the
control panel, so you shouldn't get lost.

If using the XP start menu, click Start and then click the user icon. It
will bring up the Change Picture dialog box. You can select one of the
supplied pictures or one of your own.

If choosing one of your own, smaller ones work best (less distortion). XP
will create a new file from your selection and use it as your account's
icon.
