hello,

i have an icon on my desktop that i cannot remove.

when i try to delete the icon by clicking delete, or modify its properties,
a message that says 'cannot read file from disk' pops out. it doesn't have an
extension and i have no idea where it come from.

is there anyway i can remove this icon from my desktop?

thanks.

Not scientific, but has worked for me in the past. Locate which store
point it's in ( Local Profile, All Users ) and with Explorer, Cut & Paste
it to the Root of C:. Once there you should be able to add permissions
( Safe Mode for XP Home) to the file and then delete it. This won't
work if the system currently has open File Handles on the file ( A whole
different process to delete, if that's the case ).

hi,

thanks for replying, but when i try to cut the file, the 'cannot read from
the source file or disk' message pops out - in fact, this message pops out
whatever i do to the file (e.g. open it, cut it or copy it then paste it,
delete it and so on).

what if the system currently has open File Handles on the file?

thanks again.

its icon is the icon shown by windows whenever windows encounters an unknown
file type, and all the fields in its properites window are blank.
