Can't delete icon from desktop

I downloaded a pdf file from an email. This (as usual) puts an icon on my
desktop of the file. Usually when I'm done with the doc (or earlier) I can
drag the icon into the Recycle Bin. Not this time.

When I try to delete I get the error messge:"Cannot delete file: Cannot read
from the source file or disk"

I've tried re-downloading the file. I can then delete that file but not the
first.

You say drag to recycle bin, but did you try highlighting and hitting
the DEL key?
I know, it shouldn't matter but....
That or right click and then delete.

Yes, I tried all that. I also did a file search, found it, and tried to
delete it from Windows Explorer.
