ICF on Dial-up connection

Should ICF be enabled on a dial-up Internet connection.
Working on friends computer today, which is loaded with viruses and spyware,
he was adamant that you don't need ICF enabled on a dial-up connection, tried
to gently persuade him that this is root of all his problems.
Is there any truth in his theory or has he been badly misguided.

All internet connections need a firewall. Dial up / cable / dsl / whatever.
If he's loaded with viruses and spyware, that can be PART of the root of the
problem.

Hi, Perplexed.

Just remind him that, if the good stuff can get in, the bad stuff can get
in, too.

Thanks Frederico, although you do have me slightly worried now by informing
me that it could only be part of the problem.
My friend is a complete novice to the world of computers and of a certain
age, although he has an out of date Norton AV he has no spyware or adaware
protection, which I have remedied today.
Although Spybot has eradicated most of his spyware I find 'ISearchTech' is
proving problematic.
If yourself or anybody else out there has any good tips about eradicating
and safeguarding a relatively new comp which has been running without ICF
enabled I would be much obliged.

The other and major part of the problem is bad online habits. If you
don't know what it is then don't click on it and don't download things
just `cause they're free.

Delete Temporary Internet files (including offline content). Run
antispyware tools in Safe Mode and use more than one tool. I also use
Ad-Aware, CWShredder, and HijackThis.
