IBM ServeRAID - Rebuild of Entire Array!?!

V

Vincent

We recently purchased an IBM eServer xSeries 226 computer for our
company. This particular computer comes with an integrated SATA RAID
controller. I have successfully setup the RAID array, but have a
question regarding rebuilding the array. To test the RAID array, I
removed the primary hard disk and replaced it with the secondary hard
disk. Everything worked fine. Windows booted correctly. I then
replaced the hard disks so they were in their original ports. I then
rebooted Windows and launched the IBM ServeRAID Manager program. The
program was warning me that the array was critical and needed to be
rebuilt. Why did the entire array need to be rebuilt when very little
data was (most likely) not altered while the one drive was missing from
the array? Also, does anyone have any experience with the ServeRAID
controllers? Are they reliable? It is my understanding that the
controller itself is produced by Adaptec. Is this correct? Also, is
there any maintenance involved in a RAID 1 configuration? I did not
see where I could perform any routine tasks via the ServeRAID manager,
despite the fact that there is a tasks section. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.
