IAS error

this one is driving me nuts...

os config: win2k advanced server, sp4, native mode ad.

when i launch the ias gui, i am not able to view/edit the 'remote access
logging' and 'remote access policies' sections.
a red 'x' is displayed over those nodes.

screen capture

i have reinstalled ias - no change.
i have restored the ias.mdb and dnary.mdb database files from win2k cd - no
change.
i've tried reapplying sp4 - still, no change.

i've re-registered the various com dlls (iasmmc, napmmc, etc.).

there is nothing in the event log.

i've enabled trace logging with nothing of interest showing up in the logs,
except for the following two entries that appear in NapMMC.log each time i
launch the gui:
[4296] 15:50:53: RAP NODE: NT4 machine, not supported
[10236] 15:50:53: LOGGING NODE: NT4 machine, not supported

those two lines appear to correspond with the two tree nodes in mmc (logging
and policies). i do not know if they are normally present when everything is
working, but they look suspect to me.

does anybody have any suggestions?

thanks,
seamus

in case anyone runs into this brick wall as well, here is what i found...

despite trying run the ias mmc snapin on the same machine as ias, the snapin
connects to the remote registry service. if the remote registry service is
stopped, you cannot administer remote access policies/logging for ias.

this article clued me into this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254192

despite it not once mentioning ias, it appears to apply to ias as well.

ias is a great (and free) radius implementation, but this issue cost me
quite some time.
if i have the attention of any developers at ms, i highly recommend adding a
simple error message (in addition to meaningless red x's) that states that it
could not connect to the remote registry service.

cheers,
seamus
