i want to upgrade from windows me to windows xp.

I would like to upgrade from windows millenium to windows xp.
If i were to upgrade to xp would i loose music files that i have on here?

Since you didn't specify whether these files are on a separate disk, and
different partition, or the one and only disk, it is hard to say what will
happen.

The upgrade is not supposed to bother user files, but it is prudent to copy
all important files to separate media (CD or DVD for example). This assumes
that you are doing an upgrade installation.

Before doing anything, insure that the computer is free of malware and
spyware.

Purchase the full retail or upgrade edition of Windows XP (Home or
Professional).
To be safe - continue your normal back schedule as well as make an extra
backup of your data before performing the upgrade.
Also - it would be a great idea to go ahead and download/save to external
media ALL hardware drivers for your particular hardware for Windows XP.
Better to have them ready before Windows XP is installed.
Then - while in Windows ME - put in the Windows XP CD and procede to
upgrade.
