I want Outlook Express but without Problems!

I've been using Thunderbird for about a week now. I tried it because I was
so happy with FireFox. It's got a lot of things to like about it, but I'm
not sure I will continue with it. Strictly for email, it's great, but I
don't like the newsgroup capabilities all that much.

I've come to the conclusion that what I REALLY want is OE, but without the
problems and security risks. I've used it too long, I guess. The OE
featureset and User Interface seems natural, logical, and intuitive to me.
While other email clients may have features I like, none of them really do
things the way I want

What email client (freeware or payware) comes the closest to emulating OE?

Things I like about OE, I like the way it handles newsgroups.
It tells you how many messages are available and how many you've read.
I like the combine & decode feature of OE for binaries.

Things I don't like about OE
doesn't handle yenc (I don't use it, but I think a good newsgroup app
should make it available)
Filtering of email and NG messages really stinks and isn't automatic
enough to suit me.

Is there anything out there a guy like me should be looking at?

Set OE to the Restricted Zones setting and it's totally safe.

Forte Agent is the finest newsgroup browser on the entire internet. Of
course there are always those who will argue... The layout is
intuitive and natural but yes, there is a small learning curve so that
one can get comfortable with the interface. Support for yEnc format as
well as just about anything else you can think of --Forte Agent is the
'Adobe PhotoShop' of the newsgroup world. The product turns into
Forte Free Agent after 30 days of continuous use or you can pay a
small license fee to continue using Agent. Forte Free Agent is
incredibly powerful and the has nearly the same feature set as Agent.
Best wishes. Stephen Michael at (e-mail address removed).

I feel the same way you do about Outlook Express, despite its bad rep.
Rather than suggest another e-mail client, I'll describe the addons I
use that breathe new life into OE.

OE-QuoteFix: Fixes OE's broken quoting, and adds a ton of neat stuff -
colored quoting, emoticons, and more.

SpamPal: This is the greatest thing ever. It works with any email
client you throw at it because
it runs in the tray, and can be configured as a Windows service. Its
plugins enhance its usefulness tenfold. Bayesian spam filtering,
separate notifications for spam and regular e-mail, and automatic
stripping of dangerous HTML web bugs are yours. :)

I've decided to keep OE for email for the forseeable future, but
decided to switch to a regular full featured news client. Check out
XanaNews, the interface is similar to OE, it makes a nice companion.

Gravity or 40tude Dialog for news. I am using Gravity since 2002 and don't want
to know about OE anymore.

For mail I use Sylpheed-Claws.

Use 40Tude Dialog. It does everything that OE does & decodes Y-Enc posts. Also handles multiple servers & email addresses. I'm using Mozilla for my emails at the moment & 40Tude for news (I just like to keep my emails & browser together), but if Mozilla scrapped any of it's email features, 40Tude would definitely be my first choice.

I reinstalled my OS recently (Win '98), and actually removed OE from the list of features to be installed as I know that I would never use a program with so many security problems, so I wanted to keep it completely away from my system.
