Take it out and ask a computer shop to test it. It's obviously broken.
Better still, invest in a new one as it will probably be cheaper than
testing or repairing the old one.
Plain old CD ROM drives are very cheap, but perhaps now would be a good time
to replace it with a DVD burner and some good backup S/W like Drive Image
from Powerquest.
