I seem suddenly to have lost Administrator Status !

I have XP Pro SP2 and run a stand-alone PC from home . Until the other
day I was the Administrator and logged on with the Password blank.

I am the sole user of this PC

Today when I tried to instal an Application , I was refused with a
message which said I didn't have Administrator rights to do this .

When I checked iin User Accounts in Control Panel there are two
icons:-

1. <My Name> - Computer Administrator

this has now a red "X" in the adjacent box

2. Guest - Guest Account is off

Why has this happened do you suppose - the only change I've done is to
re-instal a Boot-iT Image file of the C : drive but this image file
was of the previous C: drive in which I was the Administrator.

How do I regain Administarator status ?

Actually "Administrator" and "Administrators" are not the same,Administrators
have been granted Administrator privileges on the machine,Administrator is
an account on the machine. The plural makes all the diffrence. However,if all
was
well before you ran the 3rd party junk, then youre user account is probably
corrupted,create a new account,open xp in new,run youre cmds,if all is well,
delete old account.

Thank you for the reply.

I take the point you make about the difference between Administrator
and Administrators - I hadn't appreciated that before.

I have a few questions here following your advice , however .

My present User Account is called < John Doe > - say . At the moment
this has a red " X" next to it. So , as you say , it looks as if this
User Account has become corrupted as a result of some activity by
myself recently.

This is different from my laptop , for instance - ( also XP Pro SP2 )
- which has my User Account < John Doe > without a red " X "

Following your advice , I created another account which cannot ,
presumably , be also be called < John Doe > and so I called this one
<Doe > and made this also an Administrator account .

This <Doe> Account has also appeared with a red "X" next to it
unfortunately .

I'm reluctant at the moment to delete the <John Doe> account as I am
worried about not being able to access the PC at all if I do .

It would thus appear that I still have the problem . Have I gone wrong
here somewhere ?
