I/O Device Error

I have a Toshiba L-35, and when I try and download HP software I get an error
message "The request cannot be performed becuase of an I/O device error". I
can download any other companies software beside HP. There is a Microsoft
article 891894 that describes the problem, but the solution does not solve my
problem. Toshiba says it is a Windows software problem. Any help or
suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Using Internet Explorer to reach the download URL ? or are you
using some form of built-in HP download utility ? Does the page
require you download any Active-X components or present any
information bar prompts. The message you list is more a hardware
type error and isn't normally associated with a download failure.

To eliminate Browser issues, I would maybe download an alternate
browser to test with. Personally I use Opera 9.26, available here:

I'm puzzled, are you saying that you have a HP printer and when you
install the drivers for it then you get an error about the printer? Also
"download" is a term meaning "to get a file from a server" (or the
internet) while "loading" may mean "installing" a software program or
driver.

Sorry, I have not used these boards very often, and trying to keep my
messages short, but obviously not very clear. Actualy have a cannon printer,
and that is what is installed. When trouble shooting the problem, after I
could not get the drive to read the HP software for the camera, I tried the
same disk on another computer it read the disk fine. Then I tried 2 other
different pieces of software on CD on the Toshiba they read fine, but still
could not read the original HP software. Just out of curiosity I tried some
HP printer software that I had for an old printer and it would not read that
either. I called Toshiba, they said it was a Windows problems and gave me the
article 891894, which describes the problem, but when I applied it, it did
not fix it. I should be using the word installed in all cases, sorry for the
confusion.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your reply, I should have been more specific, I think I
can go on -line and download the software for the digital camera and
avoid the problem, but I was hoping to see if I can find a fix tot he
issue. The down load problem (and success) comes when reading a CD
software download.

Before you put HP camera software on your computer, check with others and
research the issue. There are cases where HP software breaks the system big
time.

What you say it that the "CD" that you have for the HP product doesn't
work on this computer, but it does work on other computers? But other
CDs work fine on this PC, it is ONLY the HP CD's that don't work? That
doesn't really make sense, unless there is a minor problem with BOTH the
CD drive AND the CD disc. Can you copy the CD in question to a Folder on
"C" and install from there?

Yes, you have it right, I am no computer expert, but it seems really strange
to me, yet Toshiba made it sound like it was not an unheard of problem, while
my unit is out of warrantly they did suggest the Microsoft article 891894 as
fix to the problem althouhg it did not fix mine. I tried what you suggested,
but not sure how I save it to the c drive if the d drive cannot read the
disk? THink I can just go to the hp web site and download the software over
an internet connection, but was holping to sove the situation.

Thanks again for your follow up and help.

If that HP disc is the only one it won't read, then I wonder if the CD
drive is starting to fail. Is the disc scratched a bit? The laser optics
may no longer be able to compensate and that is throwing the read errors.

Brand new disk, not scratched, I have tried an hp disk for a printer won't
read that either, both will read on other computers. Maybe the drive is
starting to fail. Thanks again for your help
