When I try to run a dvd in the dvd driver (F drive), I get the message
"request could not be performed because of a I/O device error". How do I
fix this?

The message suggests that there is a hardware problem with your dvd drive.
Replacement is the only real option .

Jim, thanks for your reply, but I just took the computer to best buy today,
and they did a diagnostic check and said that it was working fine! they
wouldn't replace it.

That may be, but I/O errors are usually hardware. DVD burners are not
expensive and are easy to replace. I think I paid CDN$38 for one last
week. Just shut down, carefully remove the old one (four screws and two or
three cables), set the jumpers the same, and put the new one in. You can
do this in fifteen minutes or less.
