I/O device error

I recently reset my computer but when i try to re-install my external hard
drive I get the error message

I/O device error.

Can anyone tell me what this is or how to fix it....

Hi Lisa,
Try to Right Clcik My Computer then click on Hardware Tab, Device manager.
Locate the DHH and Right click on select properties and Troubleshoot from
there.
How do you connect your HDD to the computer?

I tried the link u posted but it didn't work, still getting same
error.....when i first installed the external hard drive it did come under
the 'ATA' catagory but now it appears to be a 'USB mass storage device'
