my computer used to run DVDs and CDs just fine, and now it tells me there's
an "I/O device error." as far as i know, this is not a hardware problem. can
i run a diagnostic and self-fix it, or is this something i have to take back
to the shop? *please* advise.

You don't realise that "I/O device error" can only be a hardware problem?
Take back to the shop. The diagnostic only able to tell you that this is an
unrepairable error.
