USB unknown device in device manager for WinXp Pro

Hello Folks:
USB device: Buffalo HD-HB250U2 "Drive Station" External USB 2.0 HD.
Machine: Toshiba Satellite notebook (celeron M) running XP Pro SP 2
Problem: The Ext. HD installs as PnP with no device driver from Buffalo. So
far so good. Formatted the drives as NTFS. Still good. A week later, boot
the notebook, connect the USB cable, power on the HD and the O/S reports:
"Found new hardware", "USB mass storage device", "USB device not
recognized", "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." Go thru the diagnostics,
dis & reconnect, reboot, contact the Buffalo tech folks, go thru the same
diagnostics and they advise to return the unit for a new one. Did that
today, but same result. Now I know its something in XP. Check the KB, and
find some ways to run the device manager to show all the devices, whether
active or not, find a lot of USB unknown devices listed as not active.
Uninstall them all and retry - still no cigar. Another call into Buffalo
tech help and still searching the KB here. Any ideas?

Incidentally, have found similar threads on this type of topic, but no clear
resolution to this type of problem.

Many thanks.

For those of you reading through for solutions to USB problems, this issue
was solved by downloading and installing an update to the BIOS from Toshiba.
Solved it immediately upon reboot. Whew!
Good luck.
