I tried installing XP over the existing windows 98 that was on the computer. Every time it goes to install it freezes with 14 minutes to go. I dont know what to do because I cant get it going. Please help. THANKS

does it happen during the 'coping files' stage, or during the actual installation stage? There are afew different options, depending on the particular stage that the computer freezes. This is just one of them.

When you attempt to upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft Windows Millennium (Me)-based computer, Setup may stop responding (hang) during the "Preparing installation" phase.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if any antivirus programs are installed on your computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Cancel Windows XP Setup to revert to your Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, or Windows Me operating system.
Disable or uninstall the antivirus program. For more information about how to do this, refer to the program documentation or browse to the antivirus manufacturer Web site.
Run Windows XP Setup again to install Windows XP.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

This is where it is converting and transferring settings from the old
system. It can take quite a long time. In my experience one thing that
caused it (it did get it done in 3 hours) was that I had used TweakUI to
point 'My Documents' at the root of a second hard drive - with a good
deal in it. If you have done that, move the pointer with TweakUI again
to point to some fairly small folder in C:.
