I need help. My background has a box that says

I need help. Yesterday while on the computer, a box popped up on my desktop
that says: Warning spyware dected on your computer. Now, I cannot update my
virus protection and the only virus scan that it will let me do is the one
from Microsoft. I have tried three other sites and cannot get on it. I have
managed to get a bunch of spyware off of my computer, but this big box on my
desktop will not go away. I am not computer tech savvy, but can follow
instructions. Can someone out there help me? I have Windows XP Professional.
Thanks!

Below are various security programs, and how to use them.
All can be installed on the computer.
No program gets everything off; thus, use a few.
But, only 1 anti-virus to be installed.
Install Avast(or AVG) if you don't have an Anti-virus installed already.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions), FREE,
auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster 4.1 is a non-intrusive, FREE Anti-Spyware Program that runs
in the background (no scanning by you!).
SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of many so-called spyware, adware
and malware programs by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX
controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage
Update it once a fortnight, and let it do its work in the background!

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with Avast(or your AV) and Spybot S & D, and
Malwarebytes while in Safe Mode.

Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. It is called "rogue"
because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them!

Because you didn't give me the name of the program that is trying to get you
to buy it, I can't point you to specific removal steps. Look for them here:

Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html ]

If the rogue program is XP Antivirus 2008/09:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic154529.html (earlier versions)

These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the
computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected
by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean.

If your machine is one of these cases, either get guided help at one of the
specialty forums below OR back up your data and do a clean install of
Windows. It is your choice. If you are unsure how to back up your data or
how to do a clean install, you can take your machine to a local computer
professional. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of
places.

Microsoft does not have an anti-virus / anti-spyware that does what
you describe. You have been hit by an "bogus" software that it
threatening you. Follow the other recommended solutions.
