I thought getting a game would be easy!

I loved Duke Nukem. I loved Max Payne and Max Payne 2. I loved Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight Academy.

But I can't find another game like these classics. I've tried these:

Deus Ex won't run on my machine (XP3000/9800 Pro/1Gig mem)

Half Life 2 demo has a jerky mouse movement and turning the smooth mouse movement on doesn't do any good so the game's impossible to play.

Can't get into Far Cry at all.

What's out there? I like a bit of shooting and puzzles but I don't want to control a squad ofsoldiers and I don't want RPG. I want it to be me against the world (a bit like Duke!)

Duke Nukem forever will probably never arrive so...

What should I get?

You're taste in games sounds very similar to mine, and I love Half Life 2 - so its a shame that won't run. Your PC is pretty fast so it should run fine (worked on my lower spec PC than that) - perhaps try upgrading drivers and patching HL2?

Have you tried the Duke Nuken expansion packs? There are 3 if I remember!

Unusual why HL2 won't run, I played it using XP3200/9800 Pro and One Gig memory. Do as Ian suggests, latest video drivers, maybe update Motherboard BIOS, update sound drivers.

I still think Far Cry and HL2 are best games ever, but that's just me.

If Deus Ex won't run, I'm assuming you're using Win XP. In which case, it's unlikely Duke Nukem will run. Or will it? I haven't tried it in Win XP.

Ok, a few suggestions, I'm a fps fan, so I be biased:

Call Of Duty One & Expansion packs
Call Of Duty Two
Painkiller Black Edition
Gore (cheap, short, but good)
Quake 4
Serious Sam 2
Halo
Devastation
007 - Nightfire

The last few titles you should be able to get at budget price, try the usual places to download demos.

Yeah, I've played all the Duke Nukems. Great stuff!

Serious Sam was too much pure blasting so I'm assuming SS2 is the same.

As you can probably guess from the first posting, I'm trying these games on demos and I had to sign up for steam for HL2 so it should have downloaded the latest version. Maybe the full game doesn't have the same problems but it's a bit of a risk as it's not budget.

Yeah, I'm going to tackle latest drivers and updates tomorrow but I'm fairly up to date as is, so I'd expect HL2 to run. But then again we are talking PCs!

Thanx for the info guys

Demo >> Link

But at eight quid including postage, not too much of a risk there.

Believe me, it's a good game.

Graphics are amazing, but it does get really hard towards the end.

Aye, that's true.

Those with queuing systems - ignore.

Yeah, there is a demo of Far Cry. Can't remember where I downloaded mine from but it's about 500Meg. Put "Far Cry demo" into google and see what comes up.

If you haven't got broadband (500meg is a long time to download on dial up!) let me know and I can send you a disc.
