I'm not clear what Backup/Restore will do for me after
this experience.
I got a new big HD (let's call it HDBIG) to replace a
filled system HD (HDOLD). So, I did a full system
backup, including system state, and saved it on a second
HD (HDSLAVE). I did a fresh installation of W2k on the
nice new HDBIG, then, using the MS Backup, used the
backup file on HDSLAVE to do a system restore onto HDBIG
(including system state from the backup file). My
intention was to restore HDBIT to maintain the system the
way it had existed when HDOLD was the system partition.

Well for those of you who are still with me and
understand what I did, it didn't work. It will boot up
OK, but I've got all kinds registry and other errors when
I attempt to use it. Worse yet, somehow (I have no idea
how or why), HDOLD, which is now setup as a secondary
slave with the intention to format it later, is now
corrupt and I'm prompted to format every time I try to
simply read a file from it so there is no going back.

So, I'm thinking I'm going to have to rebuild HDBIG and
do a clean install with new app installations, then, try
to salvage what I can from the backup file on HDSLAVE.

OK, ok, so down to the question.

So, lets say I have a real failure of one of my systems,
and lets say I was a good boy and had weekly full system
backups to draw from to attempt to bring the system back
the way it was. How would I do it? Am I missing the
whole point of backup/restore?

Thanks!

That certainly looks to me like it SHOULD have worked, and I have
done similar myself

Except... after past bad experience with the MS Backup program
(this had to do with creating a backup in an older version and
then trying to restore in a newer version of Windows... just
data files, not the operating system... and the newer version
would not read the older version's files) I now use a 3rd party
program called Backup MyPC which works great

It should have worked, the way that you described it. But anyway, that
is only one of the uses of the backup/restore process. I use it more
often when someone deletes a file or folder by accident.

Ok, I'm trying it again...
After I RTFM I realized what I 'think' was my mistake. On my first restore attempt, I selected to restore to an "alternate location" and then indicated my new C:\ (HDBIG now setup as the primary master) because it wasn't my original HDOLD that I was restoring to. On this run through I selected to restore to "original location" and to "over write all files.

Hopfully this will work and I'll have learned something

Thanks to all for your responses! I'll let you know!

Ok it worked (so far). My error was simply specifiying "alternate location" vs. "Original Location". I did have a problem with the display adapter not initializing and putting the thing in an infinite loop to attempt to reboot, hit the error, reboot....

But after going in w/safe mode and reinstalling the video adapter driver.... all seems well. No reg errors, all programs seem to be operating, etc.

Thanks again to everyone who responded. It gave the me info necessary to atleast try again.
