I need some help. I belong to a board where someone
keeps posting just gross stuff everytime I post. I can't
change my name as my IP always stays the same since I am
on cable. The owner of the board cannot ban this person
because they are on AOL. They would need to ban all of
AOL which may happen if I can't figure this out.

I was told there is a way for me to reset my computer
which would changed my ip, I just want to do this so that
this person will leave me alone. Any help or other
suggestions are welcome.

Also the board admin has contacted AOL but they do
nothing.

To possibly get your IP to change on a cable modem:
Shut your computer down, unplug the power cord from the modem and leave off
for a few hours(sometimes just minutes works). Plug the modem power back in
and wait for the modem lights to sync(get steady). Once it syncs turn your
computer on, boot up, and check your ip to see if it changed.
If you have a router you'll need to power down the router as well. Then
bring up modem, then router, then computer.

Well you should contact you cable provider to find out a definitive
answer for their service, but if your cable provider doesn't force a
static IP on you, then unplug your cable modem for a day [or as many
hours as possible], then plug it back in after that.

I wish it only would take minutes! But even if the OP happens to change
IP addresses, if the board doesn't have much volume, her stalker may be
able to deduce who she is.

Ya I agree. It usually does take hours, maybe longer to try to get it to
change. And yes, I agree, the stalker could find her easy again if they
wanted.

ceedee has the answer - ignore a troll and they just die.

Thank you Ceedee for your input....I have a thick skin
already my problem is this person is totally disrupting
the board. The admin is constantly deleting this persons
posts to me but they can't be there 24/7 so some of it
stays on for quite sometime. Yes everyone does ingnore
this lude person but it has yet to lesson their drive.
This has been going on for months now.

To see/read your IP, go to Start/Run/type cmd
At the blinking prompt type IPCONFIG and press Enter.
You cannot change that, but you can change screen names
in AOL, you're allowed up to seven. If this person on this "board"
does not contain his "gross stuff" and AOL will not take action
to ban him/her, contact the Federal Communications Commission at
http://www.FCC.gov/Indecency and Obscenity/
.
thank you very much for that info

I guess this is one of the draw backs of cable but I am
no way going back to dial up!!! lol..thank you very much
again

Well, perhaps the board's admin needs to (a) set the board permissions to
allow him to moderate and/or (b) you and he need to report the person
harassing you to AOL, with copies of the posts *every time* it happens - nag
them to take action.

One suggestion I did NOT see in all the other posts... Does this hassler
post using the same name ? If YES, create a message rule to never have to
see him/her/it again. Go to Tools>Message Rules>Blocked Senders...>Add...
button (upper-right). In next box, type it in, make selection for News, OK
and OK to close. If this fails, I can send instructions on a Message Rule
to end it IF it's the same name on each annoyance.

This is really stupid advice in this day and age of cyber
stalkers, report it to the cops, get a case file number
and record it somewhere safe.

That might work for Outlook EXpress but its not going to work for a web
hosted forum (or similar) which is what the OP appears to be having issues
with.

You're welcome.

Another suggestion is to have the admin/owner of the board require each
person to register with a valid name and valid email address and have a user
name and password for each person. Then you may be able to find out who this
person is and lock them out.
