I installed an upgrade and the cd rom doesn't run

I downloaded the last windows xp upgrades and after that,
I can't run cd-r's nor cd-wr's. I have a Toshiba
satellite notebook. My brother also has a toshiba
satellite notebook and it happens the same to him. Is
there a solution? Do we have to reset our notebooks?
Please, let me know if there is something we can do to
fix this

Try removing the upgrade using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

The problem of doing that, is that when I try to do it,
there's a message that says that a list of programs given
may not work if I remove that upgrade

That message always appears when removing a hotfix. It doesn't work
now, right? Set a restore point then remove it and see what happens.
You can always reinstall it.
