i am a fairly novice user, but i take the time to figure stuff out. i got
brave and installed a new memory card on my dell dimension 300. i have
windows xp and had 128 memory. i upgraded to 512. i have not had any problems
but how do i know if i installed this correctly. i looked at my task manager
and system info. it tells me that i have 768MB of ram. it says i have 6.47GB
of used space and 27.9GB free. this is all greek to me. i expected to see
something saying 512 of ram. by the information that i have provided does it
look as if i installed more memory? thanks so much.

Just by what you are saying, I don't see anything that jumps out at me that
indicates anything is abnormal.

For more information about the Performance tab in the Task Manager take a
look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312628

and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;243325

You can also see take a look at the Task Manager Help. To do this, start
Task Manager, and then click Task Manager Help Topics on the Help menu.

A more in depth analysis of your system can also be found using your
Performance Monitor in Administrative Tools. However, this can be somewhat
overwhelming amount of information. Windows XP does have decent help files
on this topic.

sounds like you actaully had 256mb before adding the 512 = 768. Sound like
you've installed it right though to me. It's a lot easier than you think.
Most things will only fit in one place (unless you use hammer)

As the others that posted stated, it looks as if your memory was installed
correctly. 512 + 256 = 768 which is a normal computer memory configuration.
(You did have 256 MB memory before the installation of the 512 MB instead of
the 128 you thought you had.)

The 6.47 GB and 27.9 GB are references to your hard disk drive. You should
have a partition of about 35 GB on the computer.

Thanks so much for the replys. This answered my question and eased my mind.
Dell had to recently replaced my system due to the way my previous system
ran. They replaced a dimension 2400 with a dimension 3000. I assumed that
this system had the same amount of memory as the first one which was 128MB.
The new system (dimension 3000) must come with 256MB installed, instead of
128MB which means i probably didnt need to install new memory? In any event,
this system seems to be running 100% better then the previous one. You
replied that i should have about 35GB on my hard drive. Based on what i am
learning here my system shows 6.47GB used and 27.9 free with a capacity of
34.4GB. Is this adequate? Thanks again, you guys are a big help for people
such as myself.
