Memory Upgrade-XP-Dell

Ok This may be a dump question:

I have a DELL DIMENSION 4700. It currently has DDR-2 memory. 2
sticks(256 each) for a total of 512. I wanted to upgrade so I bought a
single DDR-2 STICK for 1 GIG. Installed it - it does not work.

Am I making a mistake? Can these ddr-2 only be installed as pairs, is
there a sequence to the install? The memory type is right cause, it
matches the dell specifications.

Any help would be appreciated.

You have to buy in pairs. You need to buy another DDR-2 512MB
Always check the manufacturer first !

Their 1gb chips worked okay in my Dell Inspiron 2200 and 1200

My Inspiron works with a 256 and a 1gb chip (the 256 is non-removeable)
for a total of 1256mb

operating systems, such as Microsoft® Windows® XP, can only use a maximum of
4 GB of address
space; however, the amount of memory available to the operating system is
less than 4 GB. Certain
components within the computer require address space in the 4-GB range. Any
address space
reserved for these components cannot be used by computer memory.

That's nice. Too bad notebook computers are NOT the same as desktop computers.

Different motherboards employ different chip-sets and technology and to compare them is like
comparing apples to oranges (so to speak).

So you can't compare an Inspiron notebook's technology to a Dimension 4700 desktop.
Let's see you put a desktop RAM module in that notebook !

Did you follow the instructions on pages 95 and 96 of the 4600 Owner's
Manual?
