Hello Everyone!

I own a DELL Dimension 8250 with 256 RAM. I need to edit video and need 512
Ram and have to upgrade.

Can memory upgrades be downloaded? Or only as an external gadget? Should I
only use DELL memory upgrades?

Thanks for any wisdom!

No memory upgrades cannot be downloaded. RAM is hardware that resides on
the motherboard.
No, you don't need to use Dell memory. www.crucial.com has a method to
determine which kind you need.
The fine manual tells you how to install added memory.

That's like asking if you can download a refrigerator . RAM is a physical
piece of hardware. It can't be sent over a telephone connection You can
donload files, consiting of bytes, but not hardware.

Or only as an external gadget?

Dell is probably the most expensiev place to get ot. There are lots of other
good sources. But make sure whatever you matches what you al;ready have.

If memory serves (pun intended) you'll find that your Dimension 8250 uses
RDRAM (rambus memory)

Crucial doesn't carry it.

http://www.memory4all.com/ does though you're not likely to like the price.
+/- $150.00 (USD) for 256MB last I checked.

RDRAM must be installed in matched pairs. When you open the computer you'll
find that the two "empty" slots you'll need to put the new RAM in are filled
with blanks (called continuity modules) which must be removed and replaced
with the new RAM.

Personally if I had to upgrade a RAMBUS based computer I'd be thinking about
buying something new.

No. Another (or a different) RAM module needs to be installed in the
computer. The manual that came with the computer will have the specific
how-to instructions.

Or only as an external gadget?

No, it's an internal component.

Should I
only use DELL memory upgrades?

Not necessarily, although it is absolutely essential that any new RAM
module(s) be fully compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other
RAM module(s) already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes
jumper switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the manufacturer's
web site for specific instructions and compatibility requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, Crucial Memory's web
site (www.crucial.com) has a database to help to find the right RAM for
your specific make and model computer and/or motherboard.
