I highlight then type, original word stays. What did I change?

I used to be able to highlight a word, then begin typing, and the original
word would be deleted and replaced. I must have changed this setting
accidently. Now, I highlight a word I want to replace, begin typing, and
both the old and the new word are there. I've used Word so long now that
this simple difference is driving me bonkers. It's so simple that it does
not appear in any of the "help" entries.

What did I change? How can I change this back? Thanks!

Tools | Options | Edit tab and check typing replaces selection. Does this
solve your problem?

Select Tool > Options > Edit tab and turn on "Typing replaces selection".
