Hi all,
Three days ago, my computer re-started by itself, and when
it was finished, all of my icons in the tool bar had
changed. On top of that, I no longer have any restore
points in that program, my drivers won't work, and I can't
install or un-install anything. Also, when I send an E-
mail, I can't attach anything to it.
To date, this is what I've tried to correct the problem:
1. Re-booted and checked if I was in the safe mode-no;
2. Re-booted and hit F8,and set it to start at the last,
best start-up point- same thing;
3. Ran my anti-virus-none;
4. Looked at msconfig-it is set in the normal set-up mode-
but it ain't normal, far from it!;
5. Went to MS explore, and nothing applied;
6. I looked for the folder that might be the installation
program, but I don't know what to look for, nothing stood
out.

I don't have a start-up disk, it didn't come with the
machine, smart, huh!!!

I hope someone here knows more than I do, which shouldn't
be too hard, because I need HELP!!!
Please contact me ASAP, hell, I'll even accept a collect
call from anyone who can help me!
Thank you in advance.

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis: post your files to the
recommended forum. Some of these bad guys have started blocking users
access to AdAware's and other's pages! (More at
http://www.spywareinfo.net/sep16,2003)

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/cwshredder.zip
(Vesion 2.0 was released today. Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder before
each use.)

Without an actual XP disk about all you can do is either purchase one and
try running a repair install as follows (No guarantees it will resolve this
and your restore points are lost for good) or use whatever recovery routine
was supplied with your system by the manufacturer:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

I'm going to assume that you got the w32/swen_mm virus or
some other virus that has disabled your anti-virus software
and that your virus definitions were not up-to-date.

These viruses can and do cause all the symptoms you
describe.

You can download tools to clean your computer from several
sources. These can be downloaded on another computer and
they will fit on a floppy if needed.
From Norton/Symantec www.sarc.com
From McAfee/NAI www.nai.com look on the security link and
then tools. You are looking for a program called STINGER,
it will fit on a floppy and it removes a multitude of
viruses.
