In Outlook 2007, I have a MSN account. The only way I get a alert for mail is
by Messinger. The alerts and desttop notaficayion display do not work. Is
there a certain kind fo account you have to have to make these options work?

You won't get alerts for HTTP account types.

I'm not sure this is entirely true.

I have an msn account (HTTP) running through Outlook 2003 on XP Home.

Recently I had a problem with Outlook. Had to reinstall and all the problems
that come along with it. I finally was successful except that my desktop
notification and the sound did not work as it had for more than a year before
my reinstall.

Here’s how I fixed it: In Outlook click Tools then Email Accounts. Select
“View or change existing email accounts†then click Next. At the bottom click
the drop-down list below “Deliver new email to the following locationâ€. In my
case I have two selections there, Personal Folders and (e-mail address removed). Mine
was set to Personal Folders but I changed it to the (e-mail address removed) selection
and it works fine now.

When I first started using Outlook either it automatically had this set or I
set it myself and don’t remember. Whichever, it works when set to deliver
mail to the proper place.

The other benefit was that now everything is synchronized with the msn
server, including contacts, calendar, and tasks. This allows you to not only
view all of those items from any computer connected to the web but also is
your backup if Outlook crashes or something. The calendar, contacts, and
tasks in your HTTP account now become the default when viewing in Outlook
2003 whereas before those defaults where in the Personal Folders and not
synched with msn servers.

If you have more than one account, I don’t know if this will apply.

Hope this helps future help-seekers!
