I have Times New Roman fonts bold, italic in my font folder but they
don't show up in any of my programs like word and quark
You do see plain Times New Roman, right? And if you select some text in that
font and make it italic, the letter shapes change -- for example, a regular
letter a has a loop below and a hook above, while an italic a has only the
loop, and other letters such as f and g have noticeably different shapes.
The difference between regular and bold isn't so noticeable, but the stroke
thicknesses vary differently to keep the font readable.
That means Word is really using the separate font files when you apply the
formatting, although for simplicity it only shows one "Times New Roman"
entry in the font list. If it was ignoring the separate files, all the
letter shapes would stay the same and just be slanted or thickened.
