I have a co-worker that is using Frontpage 2003. He is connected to
the web server because he is able to see all the files on the remote
site but when I publish a changed file it is not updating the website
in production. I use Dreamweaver so I am not sure what is going on
and the co-worker only knows Frontpage.

I know our web hosting company uses Unix as a web server but I read
somewhere if you use FTP you don't need extensions. Frontpage shows he
is connected to the webserver and it even looks like it publishes the
files successfully..Its just the updates are not updating the site?? I
am at a lost? Anybody have any ideas?

thanks

When you upload content to a FP web outside of FP, then FP will not know that a change in content
has been made, until the site is open in FP and Tools | Recalculate Hyperlink is run, and in some
cases will still not shown changes.

And pages that have FP webbot component will not work if modified or uploaded outside of FP.

Thanks for the reply but I am not sure what your are telling me.
"When you upload content to a FP web outside of FP"----The website I
have was originally created in Dreamweaver. "until the site is open
in FP and Tools | Recalculate Hyperlink is run, and in some cases will
still not shown changes."---It shows my changes/updates in the FP
client just not on the site that is on the internet for the public to
see. "And pages that have FP webbot component will not work if
modified or uploaded outside of FP"---what is a FP webbot component?
And what you mean modified or uploaded outside of FP? ...The changes
were made using FP itself and than uploaded to the web server using
its FTP client.

So can I fix this or does he have to use another web editor with a FTP
client to be able to maintain his website? Thanks.

Sine the site has the FP extensions, FP really needs to be always used to maintain the site,
otherwise FP will not know that content has been changed or modified, if the content is not uploaded
or created on the site via FP.

I don't think the site has FP extensions. I never installed any. I
use Dreamweaver but a co-worker needs to be able to make updates to a
specific part of the website without having to ask me to do it. He
only knows how to use FP. I am trying to have him use FP while I use
Dreamweaver. Can this be done?

If the site doesn't have the FP extensions, then the FP user would not be ale to open the site in FP
and see all of the files/folders.

Oh.....Well, Do you think we could use two different web editors? I
can still update the site with dreamweaver. Its just frontapge isn't
publishing the updates??? It looks like it does but there are not
showing on the web??? I also read somewhere if I use FTP, I dont need
extensions for FP. I may have to get him to learn dreamweaver? Or I
may have to do the updates myself?

Type the following in your browser, to see if the site has the extensions installed:

http://www.yourdomain.com/_vti_inf.html

A 404 indicated that they are not installed.

yep, it says 404 file not found:

The page you are looking for cannot be found. It may have been
removed, had its name changed, or be temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

If you typed the page address in the address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.
If you are unsure of the page address, visit the home page and look
for links to the information you want.
If you were directed here by a link, click the back button to return
to the previous page or send an email to the webmaster informing him
of the broken link.

I found this _vti_cnf folder in my website folder. and found this info
about it. so can I delete them are I need them, to use FP along with
extensions

"If you open the vti_cnf file, inside it will look as though there are
identical copies of everything , i.e. web pages, graphics etc, but
check file sizes - they are much smaller. If you open what looks like
a web page, notepad will open it up and there will be loads of
meaningless text. The information contained in them are instructions
to the server. For example the one that contains your main home page,
will have instructions that can recognise what your host wishes the
home page to be called, i.e. index.htm or index.html or default.htm.
If you move them, delete them or rename them you could be asking for
trouble, although I do know peopple who have done that and luckily FP
has corrected it, but not always. And yes, they contain information
regarding components that require fp extensions. "

I would first check with your FP user to see how he is opening the site with FP.
