I bought windows XP about a year and a half ago when I got
a new computer. this year I found out it has so many
viruses that I had to reformat. I couldn't find my
original windows xp cd, but am I allowed to use someone
else's and put down my original registration number? Is
there a field for that when I reformat? or does the
computer automatically register whatever number is on the
CD i'm using?

As long as the CD you borrow is the same type as the one you had - ie,
retail, OEM etc.then it should work.

As long as the friends CD is the same as your own. Such as Home Upgrade
to Home Upgrade or Home Full to Home Full.

Yes - as long as it is the same 'sort' of CD; Home or Pro; Upgrade or
Full. The CDs of a type are the same - each type has a variant of the
setup program so that it checks that the key is one that is valid for
*it*.

Make sure you have the 25 character key to hand, if not, first get the
free Aida 32, enterprise edition from
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32
which is an excellent general System Info tool, and its Software -
Licenses page will tell you the one used for Windows and ones for
several other items.
