Windows XP Registration problem.

A few months ago I reloaded XP Home on a system for a friend. They
were going to install their own ISP account and re register XP
themselves.
They never did either the ISP install or the registration. The system
is now locked because the 1 month grace period has passed. I cannot
register the OS from safe mode. I had installed SP1 and SP2 so now the
XP CD is recognized as an older version of the OS and will not
install. I cannot reformat C: from Safe mode. How can I get out of
this mess?

Registration is optional. ACTIVATION is mandatory, and probably what
you are concerned with.

What do you mean that you cannot activate from safe mode? Do you get an
error message? Have you tried the phone option of activation from safe
mode?

Leave the xp cd in the drive, reboot your computer by holding the power
button down for about 5-10 seconds or turning off the power to the machine,
and start everything up. If the CD drive can boot, when "Press any key to
boot from CD" starts counting, quickly press any key on your keyboard. The
normal setup will launch. Look familiar? You will be asked to put in the
product key later.

Tried this. The CD will not boot even though it is set to boot in
BIOS.

I get an error message saying that I cannot activate the OS while the
system is in Safe mode.

Is this a dell computer because if it is there is an option to use a boot
menu. i used this on Dad's computer. try uaing kurtralls solution.
