This has been happening the for awhile..i will have sound and it will be
fine..i start playing music using windows media player, than the sound
becomes distorted and scratchy..then it will stop playing at all. I make sure
it isn't on mute and check my devices but it doesn't seem to be anything
wrong. I have to reboot my system for it to work....?

Is WMP the only player you have? If not:
Does it happen in any other player? If not:
Reinstall WMP or if so:
Uninstall/reinstall the sound adapter/chip drivers. Go to the manufacturers
support site and download/install the latest updated drivers for your OS/machine
model per their instructions.

Headphones or speakers?
Many times with headphones you may get a short in the wires. This can
lead to scratchy sound that will mysteriously clear up or start clear
and end up bad. Just a thought. Drivers on the sound device are a good
place to look also.
