I.E. 7.0+, Beta

Mikie

Hi,

Can I download and use the 7.0 Beta Version if I am using WINXP Home?
Or am I reading the MSN page wrong. It appears to indicate that 7.0 is
for WIN XP Pro, 64 bit, or for Servers only.

My IE 6.0+ is corrupt, (I can't bring up the Address Bar no matter
what I do), and I don't know how to fix it so maybe a download would be
best.

Help please,,,and thanks!

That page was written by a retard! I am suprized they have not fixed it!

Yes it will work with XP home SP2 too.

but I am personally avoiding IE7 beta because too many apps depend on IE,
and I need stability.

Be careful.
I have loaded IE7 on three machines and it constantly crashes on all of
them. Two are XP Pro and one is XP Pro with Media Center.

I would recommend waiting till all of the bugs are worked out.

But then it is MS so it could take a while. Just hope that the bug fixes for
IE7 aren't on the same type of time trajectory that Vista is!

The general advice is not to download beta products unless you have some
sound tech knowledge.
It also advised to not have auto update set - but only set to notify you.
Then wait a few days, keep watch in the newsgroups and only then decide to
update or not.
As far as I know, there has been a sort of update for known address book
probs caused by the April upgrades
Try this link - read the caveats re known issues.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-016.mspx#top

The results of the above link, I think it would be fair to say, have been
mixed.
Also search this group, basic, newusers and
windowsxp.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for the posts from about April 11.
These should give you some idea of what has been happening and you can base
your own decision on the results.
Good luck

If you have any problems with your IE installation right now, definatlly do
NOT upgrade to a test-version (BETA) of the newer version. This will only
amplify your troubles, and there is VERY LIMITED support for a test version.
(remember all the trouble people with any kind of malware had when they tried
to upgrade to SP2?)

I recommend trying Windows Defender or Ad-Aware, or other repair options for
your IE 6.0 installation.

Hi Shawn
Having just been told to avoid beta stuff, why suggest Defender - its beta
is it not??? - so MS gets another to tester to help iron out the bugs - and
without their support as I understand it.
There is other good free antispy stuff around.
The best have been recommended in the newsgroups I mentioned in my other
post.
If the poster still has the beta1 antispy, I would say stick with it till
the plug is pulled. In a couple of months, only Defender will be on offer.
The above is not just my opinion of how I see things at the moment.
If the latest KB 911567(MS06-16) doesn't fix OE for the poster I do not see
how Adware will.
His prob seems to be caused as a result of the earlier update on 11 April -
I stand corrected if that is an inaccurate summary of his needs.

I am so impressed with the level of help, user helping user. Only
thing, you folks seem like pros; I'm just a 79 year old dummy trying to
learn. Thank you so much!

May you all be blessed with peace, joy and good health!

I'd not worry about that with this one.

IE7 public Beta 2 is quite solid.

I thought I was the oldest dummy in these groups - you old devil - you just
pipped me.
Leave I.E. 7 alone for the moment. Let the younger hot-heads play around
and amaze themselves, if you know what I mean. But if you can't get the old
IE 6 up and running, then you may have to lump it.
Still, plenty of help here as you have found out.
Take care 'old man' :) :)

There is no such thing as a Beta product solid enough to be recommended
for use in a non-testing environment.

Plus the OP is already having problems with IE6 and installing a test
version of IE7 is more likely to exacerbate the problem rather the fix
it.

I got rid of Defender which was NOT as good as the Giant Antispyware Beta 1
(which you cannot get now) before trying IE7
I believe the correct USA expression is "it sucks"
The first thing it did was to prevent me logging on to windows update!
When I saw the screen I was completly lost, My favourites had gon across OK
but it didn't give you a QUICK easy to use Scroll Menu, you either had to
open the folder or get a load of those silly tabs.
I've just got rid IE7 it and wil stick with IE6, if the final version is as
bad as the beta I may swop to a different browser.
