I dumped Norton !!!!!!

....and my machine is a LOT healthier for it, and I AM A LOT HAPPIER WITHOUT
IT !!

For years I leaned towards not listening to any criticisms aimed at Norton,
in these NG's. One of the main slurs often levelled at Symantec/Norton
programs was that they are "bloatware," ...I now completely agree - Norton
IS "bloatware" - of gargantuan proportions ! ...and on top of that it's
VERY SLOW "bloatware" as well.

A few days ago I removed all trace of Norton Internet Security products, in
favour of well known firewall, and anti-virus programs, and a couple of
anti-spy/malware programs from other, well known, software houses -
(recommended by mvp's.) i.e. not the various anti-spy/malware software that
has spy/malware attached to them !

My XP home edition now starts up a lot faster, and "Shuts Down," in
approximately five seconds - something it hasn't done for almost a year.

It's about time Symantec COMPLETELY REWROTE its' internet security
software - don't you think !

Trust me, they (Symantec) know their shortcomings. That's why
yesterday they bought out Veritas for 13.5 Billion dollars. What
you describe, I did just a few weeks ago and won't look back.
Now that Microsoft has bought Giant Software (For AntiSpyware)
Symantec knows to start looking in other areas for income.

You absolutely made the right decision. I don't know why anyone uses Norton
anymore. It has become an obtrusive hog.

A few days ago I removed all trace of Norton Internet Security products,

That was the root of your problem - using their non-AV products. Over
the years they have added to their "suite" and made it just a mess.

I run their Corporate Edition AV software, and it scans both email
(pop/smtp) and Exchange traffic without any bloat or performance issues.
I've spent many years being virus free, using Norton AV and then
Symantec Corp Ed. versions and I'm going to stick with it. I've been
using computers since the 70's and never had a single virus on any
computer I've owned or controlled.

As for firewalls, if you can't afford a real firewall, a NAT box, like a
Linksys or D-Link will make a nice unit between your computer and the
internet, and you don't have to worry about configuration issues or
flaws in the personal firewall or OS as much.

Between using a router with NAT (or getting a real firewall) and
Symantec Corporate Edition 9.0 AV product, you would be very safe and
not have to deal with the bloat.

Same experience here. One of the biggest problems I had with Norton AV was
stuttering in games, I removed it and no more stuttering. I now use AVG
which is much better value for money.

Norton's not the only one. I recently added a new HP printer/scanner/copier
and camera. The software added SIX new running process. AAAAAARG!

I stopped using Norton about 8 months ago. I'm glad I did so.

- I use AVG antivirus (freeware version)
- Windows SP-2 firewall
- Spybot (freeware)
- Ad-Aware (freeware)

I have had no major problems and I'm very glad to be rid of Norton; my
system is much faster.

I'll tell you one thing. Maxtor HD (200Gb 90% full) and Norton Speed Disk
are bad match.
I did defrag HD and once it was completed HD started to make clicks (like
every 2 seconds)
At that point I knew it was BAD. HD just shit it self.
Ontrack hard drive recovery software was the only option to access data and
recover (very slow process as I'm still doing it)
I thing for sure is I won't buy maxtor HD or use norton crap (except AV)
anymore.
As maxtor goes it's second HD in 2 months that died on me. WTF.

BTW. Does anyone know what brand HDs are used by "LaCie D2 500Gb Big Disk"

The real tragedy is that the Norton stuff used to be SO good, back in the
DOS days, and he (apparently) "sold out". Guess he doesn't care, as long
as the bucks keep coming in.

If by "he," you mean Peter Norton, note that it's been many years
since he's had anything to do with any of the products which bear
his name. He sold out to Symantec years ago, and is now retired
and very wealthy. The bucks keep coming in to him, but from his
investments, not from the sale of "Norton" products.

OK, thanks for that update. I still think if I were he, I wouldn't want my
name tarnished by these "new renditions" of the bloated (Norton named)
Symantec products. But maybe when you're really rich, that becomes
irrelevant in this world.

I am glad you finally saw the light about Norton and how it takes over
your system --- reminds me of how AOL does that too -- :>

Pete sold his picture and rights to use his name with Symantec Corp. before
he left the company almost 10 years ago. He wrote many PC software books,
and independent consulting since. Yes, he finally retired.

Peter Norton doesn't tick me off, its Symantec Corp's internet and utility
software. What ticks me off even more are idiots that continue to refer to
these products as "Norton". It shows total ignorance, and deflects the
product responsibility from its originator. SYMANTEC...SYMANTEC...SYMANTEC

If possible could you clarify a few things:
What is a "real" firewall?

I have a Linksys router that conects to a 3com hub which conects to my
computer(s). Do these (Linksys / 3com) units have a NAT? I have never
configured (i don't think) anything other then the Norton I have installed on
my pc.
