I can't sync to internet time

F

FireBrick

On any server. I get an error message saying

--
An error occurred geting the status of the last synchronization. The RPC
server is unavailable.

this error message occurs with ALL servers in the Windows list.

I have manually turned off all firewalls.
Two machines, one with Norton, other with McAffee.

I'm slowly getting out of time sync.

Can anyone help?

In Control Panel » Date and Time » Internet Time, do you use
"time.windows.com"? In my experience "time.windows.com" doesn't work
very well. Try using time.nist.gov instead. Also, download
"nistime-32bit.exe" from
ftp://time.nist.gov/pub/daytime/nistime-32bit.exe and use it for
manually synchronizing Internet time. It has been working very well for
me.

Now that you connected without a firewall, start cleaning up the machine,
first with a good, up-to-date anti-virus and then get rid of hijackware.

Thank you, that little program worked well.

As a rule, end user workstations should not use stratum 1 time servers.
They should connect to stratum 2 (with permission) or lower.

Here's a list of public time servers:

http://ntp.isc.org/bin/view/Servers/WebHome

In particular, read the Rules of Engagement:

http://ntp.isc.org/bin/view/Servers/RulesOfEngagement

For most users, the pool servers are adequate. You can also consult your
ISP's tech support for the address of the time server it provides for its
customers.
