I can't launch WORD

Dear Somebody,

When I click on WORD I get this error message: WINWORD
has caused an error in WINWORD>EXE. Winword will now
close. If you continue to experience problems, try
restarting your computer.

What I tried: I loaded Norton's 2004, ran a virus scan on
WINWORD,results- no viruses. I uninstalled the program and
reinstalled, it even a few times, which imploies I
restared my computer aalso a few times.

My school project is due sooner than I would like it to
be :( :)

Any help would be great and so appreciated! Thank you.

Nothing to do with the operating system. Better to ask in a word or office
group.

You may have to "cleanse" your system of all traces of
MS Office in order to fix your problem. However, this is
something that only an expert should attempt. In the
meantime, to get going with your school project, you
can use Wordpad (Start / Run / Wordpad.exe {OK}).
It has 90% of the basic functionality of Winword and will
most likely deal with your school project file.

I also recommend that you do an on-line virus scan via
www.antivirus.com, not just of winword.exe but of the
whole system.

The cause may be due to corruption and its retention of a bad normal *.dot
file in MS Word. Use explorer and find the \Office\Startup folder that is in the
main Office applications folder. If there are any files in this Startup folder, esp.
with strange characters, delete them all. Word should start up normally. Check
the normal.dot template. Might need to make a new one. (And, BTW, a clean
install of MS Office (i.e., after deleting all of the original files) would have also
resulted in a functioning MS Word.)
